Course Details

If you would like to attend this year’s course, read the following and fill in the Application Form which can be found by clicking the link at the bottom of this page.

This year’s Edinburgh Lace Course will be held at Heriot-Watt University, Riccarton Campus, Currie, on the outskirts of Edinburgh. The dates are Monday 22nd – Friday 26th July. Those of you who were on the course last year will be pleased to learn that we will again be working in the Carnegie and Wardlaw Rooms in The James Watt Centre.

This is a Residential/Non-Residential Bobbin Lace Course for complete beginners, advanced Lace Makers or any stage in between.  It will consist of morning and afternoon tutored sessions.  Monday 2-5pm, Tuesday – Thursday 9am-5pm with an hour for lunch and Friday 9am-4pm. The workrooms will be open in the evenings for those who would like to work untutored. Claire Bonito, Frances Bell, Kitty Mason and Carole Smith are booked to come as tutors.

Meal and Snack options during the week:

  • Coffee, lunch and tea – there are several places to eat on campus during the day.
  • Evening meals at the University will require to be pre-booked (more information later).
  • Evening meals should also be available at the Marriott Hotel
  • * NB: Part of our contract with the Conference Centre says: “Conference Centre visitors are not permitted to consume food or beverages on the Conference Centre premises that have not been purchased from an on-site retail outlet”.

 Accommodation is likely to be in the Anne Macleod Hall of Residence, the same as last year. The bedrooms are single, en-suite, rooms with internet access and tea/coffee making facilities. They do not have  a TV,  hairdrier or radio/alarm clock. This accommodation is a 10/15 min walk from the James Watt Centre.  It has 2 disabled parking spaces at the front door and it’s own car park a little walk away.  This year, due to building works, the University are only able to offer residents a continental breakfast and not  a cooked one.

On the Wednesday we will have a sales day with:

  • Winslow Bobbins who will be on their last visit to an Edinburgh Lace Course as they are retiring at the beginning of next year. Last chance to buy their bobbins and beads.
  • AlisonTolson will not only bring stock from The Lace Guild, but some of her own supplies as well.
  • Lynn Turner, of Church Meadowcrafts, has agreed to bring some of her remaining stock, she says: “I have DMC threads, coton perle, special dentelle and metallic, and Gutermann Sulky. Plastic coasters, pillow bags and bobbin holders as well as bobbins and bits and pieces”. Lynn also says that if anyone would like a pillow or blocks from her they should order them in advance – the sooner the better.

Your friends are welcome to come  between 11-3pm on that day to shop and/or to look at what people are making.

Tuition only                     £175

Tuition + Residential (B&B)      £410

If you would like to reserve a place on the 2019 Edinburgh Lace Course please complete and return the application form to me.  If your friends would like to come feel free to photocopy the application form.   Please enclose a £100 deposit for a Residential place and a £40 deposit for a Non-Residential place.  Your deposit is non-returnable except in special circumstances.

Only bookings for the full Course will be taken until the end of May.  After that, if there are still spaces, bookings for part of the week will be considered.  

Cheques should be made payable to ‘The Edinburgh Lace Course’.   If you would like a receipt for your deposit please enclose a SAE.   Final payment will be due not later than Monday 3rd June. If you would like further information look at our website, send me an e-mail or give me a ring.

If you would like to book a room for either the night before or the night after the Course it has to be done through us at the time of  booking.  The  cost  is  £60  per night.

Travel directions + equipment lists will be sent to new participants at a later date.

Information sent out before the 2018 Course

The 2018 Edinburgh Lace Course will be held at Heriot-Watt University, Riccarton Campus, Currie, on the outskirts of Edinburgh. The dates are Monday 23th – Friday 27th July.

This is a Bobbin Lace Course for complete beginners, advanced Lace Makers or any stage in between. It will consist of morning and afternoon tutored sessions. Monday 2-5pm, Tuesday – Thursday 9am-5pm with an hour for lunch and Friday 9am-4pm. The workrooms will be open in the evenings for those who would like to work untutored. Claire Allen, Kitty Mason, Sue Scholes and Carole Smith are booked to come as tutors; see Tutor Information.

Meal and Snack options during the week:

We should be able to get a limited number of parking spaces in the George Heriot Car park (nearest parking to our work rooms) if a few people with mobility issues would like to park there.

On the Wednesday there will be a Sales Day with Mainly Lace as the main supplier; see their website at https://mainlylace.co.uk/. Your friends are welcome to come on that day to shop and/or to look at what people are making.
